I personally found that statement to not have much substance. In capitalism you are either a wage slave or a wage slave driver. ln other words, you are either working for less than your labor is worth or or paying someone less than their labor is worth. In each case wealth is created for the middle man. What Gekko was doing was basically being a magnified middle man, but it's no different than what everyone else who makes an "honest" living is doing from a principal standpoint. It's still taking the labor of others.

I've touched on this a bit on my blog. What are you really creating at a job? Even factory workers can't really say their creating anything. The creation started with an idea and then was designed by an engineer. The people putting it together just need to know how to do a couple things over and over. Trading is the most amoral career you can take on. You are giving or taking money from people who have accepted the same level of risk as you have.

Graham,

I've thought about that. I've been in all types of the construction feild for 15 years. 10 of it as an Electrician. As much as I am sick of this feild I have thought that if I do become successful at trading and do it for a living. 40 years from now will I look back and think what have I really provided. The obvious is liquidity for the markets. But with construction you can look back and say I built that and provided people a place to do business or a place to watch a ball game.
Personally I feel it will be no problem making money off the markets and actually having time to experience life instead of working 10 hour days. But it is something to think about for later in life.

Mark

"Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem." - PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN, 1985

Thanks to a presidential mandate I don't have that problem. lol

For me its all about balance, you need different types of ppl at all different levels of society in which the primary reason for having such a diverse society goes down to freedom of choice and the risks of not having the diversity far outweigh the benefits of having one.

I personally think that statement is a bit flawed because it fails to strike at the underlying reality that we all live in and also fails to see that a diversity of people is necessary for any nation to succeed..

There's gonna be a sequel! Gekko gets out and Shia Labouf is the new Fox.

Yea, I watched the trailer for it and as cheesy as it looks I'm still going to watch it. I just gotta see how Gekko handles his business when he gets out.
